Junior School - Morley House - Pupils aged 5-11

Junior School Pupils

A day in the life . . . Year 6

8.30am
The gate is open for the early birds. This is a good opportunity for a game of football or to catch up with overnight news before the day starts.

8.45am
The doors open and we fly through to empty our bags and then rush back outside for maximum playtime before the day’s work begins. This is a good time to tell our teacher about what happened last night and hand in our homework

9.00am Registration
Junior School pupil
This is ‘quiet’ time, when the teacher calls the register and finds out who wants a school dinner. We also have to remember to hand in any letters or messages. Each day has a different beginning. For twenty minutes after registration we either go to Assembly, Singing Together, individual singing lessons or House Meetings.

9.35am-10.35am
Maths is often the first lesson of the day. We begin with a fun session, perhaps using individual wipe boards and pens for mental maths, this is an opportunity to wake up our little grey cells. The main part of the lesson will be learning or practising something new. We often work in groups so that we can move on at our own speed. Sometimes a group will work outside of the classroom, with a different teacher. Usually, at the end of the lesson we all come together to see what we have learnt.

10.35am
Break Time. After our healthy snack, we go to the playground; the first people on the playground get the best balls! We have one day a week when it is our turn to use the adventure playground.

We just hope it does not rain on that day! Sometimes the duty teacher has a go on the monkey bars
.

11.00am -12.45pmJunior School Pupils
Back into class for an English lesson. This may be creative writing or comprehension but each week there is a different theme, perhaps play scripts, journalism or persuasive writing. Each lesson will include a time for speaking and listening as well as reading and writing. The best sessions are Drama or ICT. The final lesson of the morning will often mean that we move out of the classroom, perhaps for Music, PSHE, ICT, a library session or P.E.

12.45pm- 1.45pm
At lunchtime we have time to play before lunch and again afterwards.

1.45pm
After a short registration, the afternoon continues with different subjects: History, Geography, Science, R.E. or, most popular of all, the Games afternoon. Once a week we go to the Senior school for the afternoon to do Science, H.E. or CDT.

4.00pm
The school day finishes but if we want to we can join the after School clubs.

My favourite lessons are :
Drama and Games.

My favourite day is :
Tuesday because we have triple Games or possibly Thursday because it is more relaxed with Art and our lesson at the Senior School
.

Morley House - Our Ethos

In the State system the learning in junior schools is split into 2 key stages. We also separate our approach to teaching but strongly believe that the natural break in the way that pupils learn best happens at the end, not the start of Year 3.

From this point we need also to focus on the different nature of teaching and learning in a senior school. In Morley House pupils are largely taught in the same class with the same teacher up to the end of Year 3.

As they enter Year 4 specialists in Art, Geography and History are introduced to establish different styles and approaches and better prepare them for the transition to a senior school.

As they move into the older year groups of Morley House the pupils attend specialist classes at the Lewes Old Grammar Senior School.

On two afternoons every week pupils in Years 5 & 6 are taught in Science laboratories and DT rooms and have access to Modern Languages, HE and Music specialists.

This enables them to prepare for the Senior School and work with teachers who will see them when they transfer up. These afternoons provide them with new and exciting challenges and develop confidence by removing any anxieties about the next transition.

Our size enables us to organise a wide range of educational visits throughout the academic year, enlightening the pupils and making the learning experience both real and tangible.

We are aware that children learn in different ways and at individual levels. Pupils who might find some areas of the curriculum difficult receive added help from our dedicated team. Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) will identify potential strengths and weaknesses and an individual programme of intervention will be designed to enable the pupil to fulfil their potential, developing both ability, and most importantly, self confidence.

Popular after-school extra curricular clubs operate but these are voluntary and included in the fees. They provide additional opportunities both for developing new experiences and consolidating existing interests but because they extend the school day we let parents and pupils choose to be involved.
