A Day in the Life of . . . Reception Class

8.45 - 9.00 am
I’m ready for my day at school and can’t wait to arrive and see all my friends. I run into my classroom and hang up my blazer on my name peg which has a special picture next to my name. After putting away my water bottle, snack and book bag I choose what I’d like for lunch on the menu board and then join my friends playing with the buckets and spades in the sand pit.

9.10am
It’s time for register and we take it in turns to have a special job and it’s my turn to be the leader.

9.15am
This morning we have assembly in the hall and I like the singing.

9.30am
Back in the classroom it’s time for ‘Jolly Phonics’. There are lots of fun activities to choose from. I start in the group drawing the letter in different pattern trays and on the interactive white board with the special pen, then I move on and play a sound game. Now I can visit a learning area of my choice and I choose the small world activity – it’s a pirate ship today! Each time I visit a different learning area I must remember to stick my name card on the whiteboard so my teachers can see the choices I’ve made.

10.20am
It’s time for snack and then playtime. I love to play with my friends on the climbing frame and whiz down the slide; my favourite is the caterpillar tunnel.

10.55am
The whistle has gone so it’s time to line up. We’ve got a red star for lining up sensibly for our star chart.

11.00am
Back in the classroom I look at the visual timetable and see it’s time for music. We follow the leader (which today is me!) into the hall where there are all sorts of exciting musical instruments to choose from. Today we march playing our instruments and feel like a real band !

11.30am
Back in the classroom there are now lots of different numeracy activities for us to choose. I can’t wait to get started! Sometimes we go outside into the garden with the teacher.

12.00 – 12.15 pm
Before lunch we wash our hands, listen to a story in the cosy book corner and as leader I get to line up first for lunch !

12.45 – 1.40pm
It’s play time in the playground! Another red star for good lining up !

1.45pm
PE time - the teachers help us to get changed and I get a special sticker for trying hard and putting on my own P.E. socks. In the playground there are lots of hoops, bean bags, buckets and balls. I want to balance a bean bag on my head !

2.45pm
We stay in the playground - it’s playtime !

3.00pm
I quickly get changed and put on my painting apron. I’m painting a picture of my family to take home and show everyone.

There’s nobody sitting on the computer so I think I’ll have a go. I like the special game called ‘Wordshark’

3.20pm
I am called to read to the teacher. I take a book home every day in my book bag and read it before I go to bed.

3.30pm
Yippee I have got time to visit another learning area before I go home. I choose the malleable area – I like the sand mousse !

3.45pm
We listen to another story before getting ready to go home. It’s my turn to take ‘Eddie’ home tonight, he’s our class bear. We went to the bear factory in Brighton and watched him being made. Everyone put a red heart inside his chest before sewing him up. We bought him some special pyjamas too! I can’t wait to take Eddie home and write in his special diary book.

Morley House - Pastoral Care (continued)

The form teachers will be in their classrooms greeting the children at 8.45am and dealing with any issues. During registration any worries are dealt with and the positive tone set for the day ahead.

Pupils move around the school with confidence knowing that they can approach all teachers if they need to. They feel safe and secure and they have a strong sense of belonging.

They know it is their school and that it is a school where they will be looked after throughout their educational journey.

Breaktime and lunchtime are well supervised to ensure the safety and well being of each pupil.

At lunchtime, a part of the day that can cause anxiety for some children, 3 staff are in the dining room and two staff and a mid-day supervisory assistant are on duty outside
.
