Music at Lewes Old Grammar School
The aim and ethos of the Music Department is that music should be exciting and accessible to all pupils and that the department should offer a teaching style and environment that is inspirational and innovative.
The National Curriculum is followed but to ensure that creativity is allowed and diversity encouraged, music through the ages is studied, with some topics in depth - along with a mixture of performance and composing skills.
The department is now able to offer tuition on the following instruments during school time from top local teachers:-
Guitar & Bass |
The Violin |
Percussion & Drums |
Saxophone, Clarinet & Flute |
Singing |
The Piano |
Brass Instruments (available on request) |
We have formed a School Choir ‘VOX’ which is very popular and is led by our singing teacher Rachel Munro.
This meets every week and includes boys and girls from all year groups along with members of staff. The choir regularly performs at lunch time concerts, school events and also many official occasions in Lewes - for instance the official opening of the new Legal Hilary Term in January for local judges.
Every two years the Music Department, along with the Art and Design Departments, is involved with the LOGS Performing Arts Festival held at the Lewes Town Hall.
To help create a diverse interest in different genres of music there are different groups for pupils to become involved in :
A School Orchestra that consists of strings and woodwind and meets weekly |
A Rock Orchestra “Logarhythm” that enjoys playing Pop, Jazz and Big Band compositions |
A number of individual school bands consisting of LOGS students which use the department facilities to practice |
Musical Theatre workshop - part of the LOGS Senior School extra curricular programme |
At Morley House tuition is offered in :
Recorder |
The Violin |
Guitar |
The Piano |
Singing with Rachel Munro |
Wherever possible the pupils from both the senior and junior school perform together whether in the Vox Choir or in musical groups
