Year 6 & The Lewes October Feast

octoberfeast
Year 6 Display in the Window of Happy Feet Boutique
The Lewes October Feast is a festival of food and drink with events in and around the town and runs from October 1st – 10th 2010.

The aim is to promote local, sustainable food and drink in Lewes and the surrounding area and at the same time support local producers, shops and restaurants. In addition local schools and colleges are encouraged to become involved and learn about sustainable food issues and also have the opportunity to create displays in prominent windows around the town which are then judged at the end of the ten days.

Year 6 took part in the festival and worked hard on their display and decided that Sustainable Food should include:

Reducing the impact of farming on the environment
Reducing the amount of energy used in the production of food
Ensuring the health, hygiene and living conditions of animals
Encourage consumers to buy local, seasonal food
Encouraged consumers to read and understand food packaging

The focus of our display was “Small Change -  Big Difference” and since the LOGS display was in the window of Happy Feet Boutique, we thought that it would be a good idea to use carbon footprints as a starting point !

A trip to Plumpton College was arranged for the students to find out which of their farm enterprises were most sustainable and what the College were doing to improve their sustainability.

The theme of Sustainable Food was expanded to include other lessons such as using local seasonal ingredients to make crumbles and vegetable soup during HE lessons, investigating the logos found on sustainable food products and making papier mache seasonal fruit and vegetables

Finally each pupil decided one way that they could make their lives more sustainable.

Although the display did not win all the students agreed that the exercise was fun, challenging and very worthwhile and would love to take part again next year if LOGS is invited.
