Each year at the end of their time in Morley House - Year 6 are taken by Lewes Old Grammar School staff for a residential week at an outward bound activity centre on the Isle of Wight

Little Canada is set in 48 acres of woodland on the water’s edge at Wootton Creek and is a perfect location for Year 6 to practice a range of creative and sporting activities - both on land and water

Year 6 students, with assistance from their Teachers Sarah Jago & Tim Virgo, report by e:mail their daily experiences . . . . . .

Monday 18th May - Evening Blog

This is the first time we have had time to send a BLOG. We are settled in our chalets and the children are participating in their first activity

This involves finding flags around the site and answering questions about that country

Steve, the Group Leader is struggling manfully to get them to follow instructions

He is a LOGS ‘old boy’ & he seems really excited about having us as his group

We had an uneventful journey to Portsmouth, after making contact with Mrs Crossland, who solved the mystery of Riti’s missing mobile

The Historic Dockyards proved to be a great success. Having enjoyed the Trafalgar Experience, we then went to the Nelson Museum

Here there were plenty of ‘hands on’ exhibits. We even saw the newest and most expensive modern battleship - HMS Daring. This was described as £1 billion pounds worth of new defence technology

The crossing was surprisingly smooth considering the strength of the wind

Little Canada remains a fantastic place for this kind of trip

Let’s hope the children still feel the same at the end of the week :-)

We do not hold out much hope of sleep tonight.

There are some very loud and shrill voices in this group ! !

No doubt tomorrow you will hear the children’s view - Room 7 will be reporting (SJ)

Last night it was very hard to get to sleep !

We can’t go into too much detail because Mrs Jago is watching us as we write this !

Breakfast was at 7:55 - so it was hard for some to get up ( the girls ! )

We were all very excited to start our morning activities.

Mrs Jago’s group did Jacobs Ladder and Mr Virgo’s group did Fencing and then we swapped around.

We all enjoyed it all !

Then lunch came - it was yummy ! We ate so much, including sweets.

We don’t know how we will all manage tonight’s dinner ! But we will try !

Our first day here have been really enjoyable.

We will keep you up to date with what is yet to come ! !

PS: Mr Virgo’s group will have the camera so watch out ! ! !

LOADS OF LOVE! :

Jaime xx Tilly xx Beri xx and Phoebe xx ! ! ! !

Yesterday we all had a go on the zip wire. It was massive. Some of us went upside down and did tricks. The rest of us just climbed the 30 foot high tower and launched off the platform, which was shaking.

Sometimes the instructor just pushed us off unexpectedly. We then ‘zipped’ down the wire and had to release the flip flops ! A difficult task for some -
It was great !

At the start of the tunnel trail it was scary. It was like a mine; it was pitch dark and nobody knew where they were going.

When we got to the tunnel centre we found the instructors waiting for us and we played games like Sardines, Cops and Robbers and Find the Shoe.

We can’t say much more because Group 2 has not done it yet.

We have learnt how to fire an arrow in Archery. We played games where we had to score points so that we could win cutlery for our dinner ! !

Annabel and Henry were really good but everyone had a knife, fork and spoon to eat with.

Wacky Races last night lived up to their name. We did some running races but the rest involved drama. Everyone had to impersonate a chicken.

Elliot missed this activity due to an incident involving his little finger and a door. However, he has now seen more of the Island than the rest of us.

Mrs. Jago had to get all of us out of bed this morning. We were all asleep with 10 minutes to go before breakfast.

This morning we went kayaking and canoeing.

We all went together taking it turns to use the different craft. It was really fun. The activity was held on the local beach. Lots of us capsized but we all got home safely ! !

Hi Mums and Dads and families. We are having a great time - missing you lots - see you on Friday.

Lawrence, Oscar, Henry, Aaron, Elliot and Ben

Yesterday afternoon we did Low Ropes. This is like an assault course or adventure playground. The objective is to get round the course as a team.

It was pretty challenging; the balance beams were definitely the hardest. Team B got round in the fastest time; some say they were cheating: Team A were held up by Team B.

Some people found outside climbing really easy – Ben was called Monkey Boy because he climbed up effortlessly.

One wall was much harder than the other but everybody had a go on each wall.

Our evening session was swimming. This was really exciting. The pool was freezing ! ! But we soon got used to it. We started with a splash fight and then we played with hoops and balls.

The girls pulled the instructor in and he sprayed everyone with a bicycle pump to get his own back. The boys played a cross between handball and volleyball.

This morning, after breakfast we went on a very long and tiring hike. It took two and a half hours and was six miles long.

The instructors told us to look out for an escaped baby leopard from the zoo. Some people were rather nervous but we did not see anything.

Some body heard purring but this might have been a Drop Bear snoring. Our camouflage stopped us being attacked by them - anyway we understand that they are nocturnal.

We also saw where the flint pixies were trapped. These are nasty creatures that sharpen their teeth on flints.

It’s been an epic adventure. We have all had so much fun.

This is the last Blog of the week and we want to try to sum up our experiences.

The teamwork exercises would be extremely hard on your own but they are easier to do if we work together.

The Staff have been great especially our Groupie Steve, who is an old boy from LOGS.

The high points of the week have been the food, which was better than we thought it would be, the zip wire because it was so high which made it challenging, and Aeroball.

Aeroball is an activity which is like basketball on trampolines. It made you sweat a lot. It was tough.

Sean and Fred played really well against another school, winning 5:0 but we did rubbish against our own school.

Gabriel and Chris M got 38 points and won all their games.

Our final evening activity was spent at the Disco. It was hot and crowded but great fun.

Fred lost his voice - the DJ and instructors worked hard to make sure we had a great time.

The quality of the music was debatable. There were good songs, bad songs and cheesy songs. But everyone was dancing and had a good time
.

This morning we have done Sensory Trail but we weren’t allowed to get too muddy as we were travelling home and our clean clothes were already packed up and on the minibus.

Our final activity was Low Ropes. It was challenging. Sean’s sense of balance is awful.

Can’t believe it is time to go home. We have had a great week.

A big thank you to the instructors and our Groupie - Steve.

See you later.

Sean, Chris M, Fred & Gabriel
