Sixth Form - Academic Information

At LOGS in the Sixth Form we continue to offer a programme of academic A Levels because we feel that this best suits our students.

There has been much criticism in recent years of A Levels. Parents and to some extent the teaching profession has belittled the qualification. There is an assumption that “changes” always means “progress” and “new” always means “improved”

At LOGS we offer A Levels because we feel that they represent the tried and tested and because the A Level system offers the option of selecting the number and precise combination of subjects that will suit each individual student. Surely this is preferable to the compulsory prescription of the IB?

We do keep a sharp eye on the changing landscape, constantly monitoring and evaluating the various qualifications on offer.

Our continuing commitment to the A Level programme should not, therefore, be seen as conservative inertia, but as a positive and conscious decision, bearing all the options in mind, to do what we believe is right for our Sixth Form pupils.

We believe that A Levels still offer a depth and rigour not to be found elsewhere. Their flexibility allows us to construct individual programmes to suit each pupil.

They remain an excellent preparation for the good universities which are the next step for the vast majority of our leavers.

As far as breadth is concerned, the pupils at LOGS receive one of the broadest educations imaginable; and this breadth is not prescribed, but rather developed to suit the interests and talents of each individual.

Students and their parents will largely be choosing at this stage of their education between the enormous, impersonal programmes being offered by Sixth Form colleges. We feel that by restricting our Sixth Form to a maximum of 60 students we can ensure that we can focus on their specific, individual needs.
