Design Technology

Design Technology

Our design and technology course focuses on product design and in addition pupils also get opportunities to explore ideas and approaches to architecture.

We take a practical approach in which pupils learn about using tools and materials alongside creative problem solving challenges.

It is important to us that pupils in each year group use practical tools and develop the skills needed to realise their ideas. Projects are designed so that pupils recognise the need for research and sketching ideas in the development of good design solutions.

We see experimenting and model making is an important part of the design process. Pupils are encouraged to develop a personal style, while still being aware of the technical constraints of making, environmental issues and exam board expectations. Design and technology is not just a craft, it is intellectually challenging and we aim to develop the students understanding of seeing a project through from design brief to the finished product.

It is important to us that pupils enjoy their time in the workshop, having a good experience working with tools and materials. It is also important to us that pupils develop an understanding of what good design is, either as a designer themselves, or someone who is able to appreciate quality products.

GCSE Edexcel

The new course is focused on product design in which pupils produce a design portfolio and finished product for 50% of their mark and sit a single exam that tests their knowledge and understanding for 50% of their mark.
